  APS6 – Financial Accountant

The National Health Funding Body (NHFB) is a small but unique portfolio agency of the Department of Health, primarily responsible for determining the Commonwealth National Health Reform funding and administering over $40 billion in Commonwealth, State and Territory funding to public hospitals across Australia.

The Finance and Reporting team is the centralised financial accounting team for the organisation and provides financial services to the CEO of the NHFB and the Administrator of the National Health Pool Accounts. This includes strategic budget and financial management of the departmental appropriation for the NHFB, and the preparation of NHFB financial statements under the PGPA Act which is audited by the Australian National Audit Office. Additionally, the team manages the Payments System and processing of Commonwealth, state and territory deposits and payments into and out of Pool accounts to hospitals.

The person we are seeking will have a natural affinity with financial management systems and demonstrated experience in:

  • undertaking monthly reporting work that is provided to the Department of Finance.
  • preparation of month-end and year-end accounts, journals and reconciliations.
  • assisting with preparation of the annual financial statements including completion of detailed working papers.
  • preparing and coordinating reports on departmental program expenditure and revenue and analysing variances.

The successful candidate needs to have well developed judgement, attention to detail and initiative as well as a substantial record of achievement and reputation for the delivery of results. It is essential that you are a strong accounting professional with relevant tertiary qualifications and current membership of CPA/CA, or working towards completing your CPA/CA membership.

As an extra-small agency with an average staffing level of 21 people, it is necessary that you are a self-starter with a proactive attitude to participate across a wide range of functions within the team and the organisation when required.
